The Kamakhya temple glittering in gold as the authorities unveiled the new look of the golden domes of the iconic temple on Thursday. The dome has been done up in 20 kgs of gold donated by Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani.

The three pitchers on the dome were unveiled with a low-key ceremony inside the temple premise due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) had donated gold for the new dome. Engineers and artisans sent by RIL began the gold plating work of the Shikhara (main dome) in October this year.

 

Kamakhya temple is located on top of the Nilachal Hills in Maligaon. The construction of the three domes started in October and ended during this Diwali. In 2018,Ambani had promised to donate the gold during his visit to the temple ahead of his daughter Isha’s wedding.

The Kamakhya Temple also known as Kamrup-Kamakhya temple, is a Sakta temple dedicated to the mother goddess Kamakhya. It is one of the oldest of the 51 Shakti Pithas. Situated on the Nilachal Hill in the western part of Guwahati city in Assam, India, it is the main temple in a complex of individual temples dedicated to the ten Mahavidyas of Saktism: Kali, Tara, Sodashi, Bhuvaneshwari, Bhairavi, Chhinnamasta, Dhumavati, Bagalamukhi, Matangi and Kamalatmika.

According to Kalika Purana denotes the spot where Sati used to retire in secret to satisfy her amour with Shiva, and it was also the place where her yoni (genital) fell after Shiva danced with the corpse of Sati.
