The Fit India Movement grows stronger as the Government of India on Thursday offered official recognition to yoga as a competitive sport, preparing the ground for the ancient discipline’s inclusion in national, state, and university level championships organized in the country.

Taking to Twitter, Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju said, ” Hon’ble PM Shri
@NarendraModi Ji’s vision to popularise Yoga and to make Yogasana as a sport is fulfilled today. Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has officially recognized Yogasana as a competitive sport. As YOGA is India’s gift to the world, YOGASANA is a gift to Sports World.”

He further said “Hon’ble PM  @narendramodi Ji’s vision has helped popularise Yoga and Fitness across the country. The #FitIndiaMovement grows stronger today with ‘YOGASANA’ being adopted as a competitive sport. Fitness ka dose, aadha ghanta roz!”

 

“Now that yogasana has been formally declared a competitive sport by the government, it will be made a part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Khelo India initiative that will ensure states will work towards organizing sports events including for yogasana in an organized manner, like it happens for other sports,” said Kiren Rijiju, minister of state for youth affairs and sports.

 

The Sports Minister also said yogasana will also be added to the Khelo India Games program in future. 51 medals have been proposed in four events and seven categories in the sport for competitions.

Events will, reportedly, include traditional yogasana, artistic yogasana (single and pair), rhythmic yogasana (pair, free flow/group yogasan), individual all round-championship and team championship.
