India’s Sumit Nagal on Tuesday becomes the first Indian to win a singles match in 7 years. The 23-year-old Sumit Nagal beat Bradley Klahn 6-1, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 will now face second seed Dominic Thiem in round two.World No 124 Nagal, who made his Grand Slam debut as a qualifier at US Open last year,had lost to 20-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer in the first round last year but gave the legend a scare by taking the first set before going down 4-6, 6-1, 6-2, 6-4 at the Arthur Ashe Stadium.

 

India’s Sumit Nagal reached the second round of the 2020 US Open , will now face second seed Dominic Thiem, who went through after his opponent – Spain’s Jaume Munar – retired while trailing 6-7, 3-6.

 

Sumit Nagal’s win ensures the 122nd-ranked will take at least USD 1,00,000 (Rs 73 lakh approximately) for making it to the second round at Flushing Meadows.

 

Born 16 August 1997, Sumit is an Indian tennis player who won the 2015 Wimbledon boys’ doubles title and became the sixth Indian player to win a junior Grand Slam title. He represents India at the Davis Cup. He finished as runner-up in the 2018 Junior Asian Games along with his Indian partner Amandeep Singh and Raj Kumar (sub pro).
