Tokyo Olympics 2021: India beat Australia 1-0 to reach the semifinals in women’s hockey of the Tokyo Olympics at the Oi Hockey Stadium North Pitch on Monday. This will be the Indian women’s hockey team’s first semifinal appearance in the Olympics.

India will face Argentina in the semifinals, who defeated Germany 3-0 in the first semifinal.

After PV Sindhu won a historic second individual medal (bronze) and the men’s hockey team entered the semifinal after a gap of 49 years.

Gurjit Kaur scored her first goal of the tournament to give India a 1-0 lead. Led by Rani Rampal, the Indian women’s hockey team created history on Monday by advancing to their first semi-final in the history of the Olympics.

In the 22nd minute of the game, Gurjit Kaur scored her first goal of the tournament to give India a 1-0 lead.

At Rio Olympics 2016, India finished 12th out of 12 teams and had also lost 1-6 against Australia in the mega event.


Lauding the Indian team’s performance, Sports Minister Anurag Thakur wrote, “Splendid Performance!!! Women’s Hockey #TeamIndia is scripting history with every move at #Tokyo2020 ! We’re into the semi-finals of the Olympics for the 1st time beating Australia. 130 crore Indians to the Women’s Hockey Team – “we’re right behind you”!”
