Due to Covid 19 outbreak, Assam State Zoo-cum-Botanical Garden was closed for over ten months due to the Covid 19 pandemic which is likely to reopen from January 2, 2021. Tejas Mariswamy, Divisional Forest Officer of the State Zoo stated, “All COVID-19 protocols will be strictly followed to prevent the spread of the virus.”
Tickets will be sold only in the online mode and 1,000 visitors will be allowed per day to avoid person-to-person interaction. Wearing of face masks/cover, use of sanitizers, and maintaining of social distancing have been made compulsory for visitors as well as the zoo staff. The zoo was supposed to reopen on December 1, but the schedule to reopen it was delayed due to the prevailing pandemic situation.
“We had plans to reopen the zoo, but due to the recurrence of Covid-19, we kept it closed,” said Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), Tejas Mariswamy.
The staff handling the ticketing and cash shall be fully under the protocol of N95 masks and gloves. The booking will be done online through ORCS. There will be booking personnel at the gate to assist the ticket booking online for those who don’t have access to the internet.
The zoo is home to about 895 animals, birds and reptiles representing almost 113 species of animals and birds from around the world.
