Supreme Court allowed women to take the NDA exam scheduled for September 5. Supreme Court on Wednesday slammed the Indian Army for not allowing women to take part in National Defence Academy (NDA) entrance exams.

A petition was filed by lawyer Kush Kalra urged equal opportunity for women at par with men to get admission at the prestigious Pune-based National Defence Academy (NDA) and Kerala-based Indian Naval Academy (INA).


Women cannot claim violation of any fundamental right for being denied entry at the National Defence Academy or the Indian Naval Academy, the Centre told the SC.

According to reports, The petition raised the issue of violation of Articles 14, 15, 16 and 19 of the Constitution of India by denying the opportunity to eligible women candidates to join NDA.

“Eligible and willing female candidates are not allowed to take the said examination (of NDA and Naval Academy) on the sole ground of their sex…and this act of discrimination is a dishonour committed by the respondents to the Constitutional values of equality (Article 14); Article 16 (equal opportunities in matters of public employment); Article 19 (freedom to practice a profession), and non-discrimination (Article 15) in the Constitution of India”.


NDA is a national level exam. National Defence Academy or NDA is one of the most sought-after defence entrance exams in the country. It is conducted by UPSC for admission to the Army, Navy and Air Force wings of the NDA. This exam is a gateway for candidates looking forward to joining Defence Forces including Army, Navy and Air Force.

The UPSC has released a revised exam calendar for all its recruitment examinations. Like other exams, the NDA (I) scheduled on April 19 was postponed due to the outbreak of Novel Coronavirus (COVID 19) pandemic. The official notice reads, “A common examination for both NDA & NA (I) and NDA & NA Exam (II) 2020 will be held on September 6, 2020.” Aspirants who have applied for NDA (I) no need to apply for NDA (II). Interested candidates can register online for the exam between June 10 and 30, 2020.
