Surekha Sikri (सुरेखा सीकरी), the Veteran actress, popular for playing matriarch Kalyani Devi in the TV show Balika Vadhu and has also been part of the comedy film Badhaai Ho passed away on Friday (July 16).

The actress was facing health troubles for some time and had suffered a brain stroke in 2020 and a paralytic stroke earlier in 2018.

“Three-time national award-winning actress, Surekha Sikri has passed away following a cardiac arrest earlier this morning at the age of 75. She had been suffering from complications arising from a second brain stroke,” the actor’s agent Vivek Sidhwani said.

Sikri is survived by her son, Rahul. Her husband, Hemant Rege, died in 2009.

Sikri’s performance in the 2018 comedy Badhaai Ho won her the National Film Award for best supporting actress. Her last appearance was in the Netflix anthology film Ghost Stories, in the episode directed by Zoya Akhtar.

Sikri had previously won National Film Awards for tremendous performances in Tamas (1986) and Mammo (1995).

Sikri was born on April 19, 1945, in Almora.

She was awarded the Indian Telly Award for Best Actress in a Negative Role in 2008 for her work in the primetime soap opera Balika Vadhu and for the same show won the Indian Telly Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role in 2011. In addition, she won the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1989 for her contributions to Hindi theater.

She won three awards: the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actress, Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress, and the Screen Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in the film.
