When the entire world is fighting novel corona virus disease COVID-19, yet another threat Cyclone Amphan severely affecting West Bengal & Odisha. Since last few months COVID-19 has already infected more than one lakh people in India, taking the lives of more than 3,000 people. Heavy rain and windstorm have affected several districts in the Gangetic West Bengal since morning and the force of the downpour and wind increased gradually with every passing hour. The cyclonic storm lay at 106 km south-southeast of Paradip, Odisha, 95 km south of Digha, West Bengal at 4:30 pm today. Lakhs of people in West Bengal and Odisha have been evacuated from vulnerable areas and shifted to secure locations.
A woman died after a tree fell on her at Minakhan area and at Hawrah, a teenage girl died after being hit by a tin shed.NDRF Director General SN Pradhan said National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) stationed in Odisha have been deployed in the state, while many units have been pushed into service in West Bengal for relief and rescue efforts in the wake of Cyclone Amphan, NDRF Director General SN Pradhan .
Super cyclone is the strongest storm on record in Bay of Bengal, according to US Joint Typhoon Warning Center.It shows that global warming & increase in sea surface temps are increasing the intensity & frequency of cyclonic storms.
